Chairman's
Message
Greetings!
Dr.
Richard Hunter, CEO & President of FTSI and former Deputy Health
Officer for the State of Florida addressed a full room at the
September Executive Briefing to discuss Florida's statutory and
regulatory requirements that have been imposed on medical device
manufacturers located in the state. This is a topic that is not
widely understood in the industry but is the subject of new
aggressive action by the Department of Health. Following the
presentation, a lively discussion occurred about the requirements and
the industry's position on them.
The
FMMC is gathering industry input on the issue and will be formulating
an action plan to discuss these issues with the appropriate
bureaucrats and legislators in the coming months. We need your
input to develop our position and to implement the appropriate action
steps. Please forward your experiences with this issue, your
questions, and willingness to participate on the government relations
committee that is preparing the strategy for dealing with this issue
to info@FlaMedMfg.org.
Our
organization works best when our member participation is
highest. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences and
for volunteering your time to participate.

Capitol Notes
High Court Nixes "Tax Swap" Amendment from
Ballot
On September 3rd, in a quick and unanimous decision,
the Florida Supreme Court permanently removed Amendment #5 from the
November ballot for misleading title and summary language. If
passed, Amendment 5 would have eliminated local school property taxes
($8 billion worth) and required the Florida legislature to replace
the lost revenue by raising the state's 6-cent sales tax by a penny
and/or eliminating sales tax exemptions, many of which benefit
Florida's medical manufacturers. The Supreme Court
justices ruled that voters would be misled or confused by a claim
that school property taxes would be replaced with an
"equivalent" amount of state funds, when, in fact, the
replacement revenue was only guaranteed for one year.
